Category:Year of birth missing (living people)Aphasia is a general term for language-based communication impairments resulting from stroke or other neurodegenerative disease. It is estimated that in the United States, up to 1 million individuals are affected by aphasia each year and over 200,000 individuals live with aphasia as their primary disability. While the prevalence of aphasia has been increasing over time, its cost to society is much higher than originally anticipated. Of the individuals with aphasia, at least 20% are left with severe disabilities. The most common type of severe aphasia is fluent aphasia, in which individuals are able to understand spoken and written language, but are unable to communicate by speaking. To date, there is no treatment available to help people with fluent aphasia speak or understand language. There are also no current tools for clinicians or researchers to assess or quantify the language abilities of individuals with aphasia. The overall goal of this proposal is to address this pressing clinical need. Specifically, this project will develop a language assessment tool (the Aphasia Assessment Tool - AAT) to assess and quantify the language abilities of ac619d1d87
